The City of Vienna has achieved extraordinary milestones with regard to public housing: today, about 60% of the Viennese population lives in municipally built, owned, or managed housing, and the city is clearly in control of the housing market. Vienna’s housing model contributes to a tangible positive impact; for the past four consecutive years, Vienna topped the Mercer “Quality of Living” survey as the city boasting the world’s highest quality of life in the world, was ranked second in The Economist’s 2012 “World’s Most Livable City”, and number eight in Monocle’s 2012 “World’s Most Livable Cities”.

The Calder Quartet performs Beethoven’s String Quartet in F minor (“Serioso”). As part of the 2012/13 Great Performers season at Lincoln Center, the Calder Quartet comes to the Walter Reade Theater for a Sunday Morning Coffee Concert. This one-hour performance, on Sunday, December 2 at 11am, will be followed by coffee and refreshments with the artists, so come join us bright and early!

This year, one of the most important, distinctive albums in electronic music history, Monoton‘s Monotonprodukt 07 from 1982, received its first ever vinyl reissue. Tracks from the album serve as a soundtrack for Gerald Moser’s installation, a question of space - a time to question, which is on view at the Austrian Cultural Forum through Jan 6.

Konrad Becker, the artist behind Monoton, will be at the ACFNY on December 13 for a special panel discussion and performance.

Studio Lin have created 12 posters for our new exhibition, AGAINST THE SPECIALIST, which feature quotes by Arnold Schoenberg. The posters are displayed throughout the Austrian Cultural Forum’s gallery, and are matched with contemporary artworks. They are also available as newsprint stacks, for exhibition visitors to take home.

Arnold Schoenberg’s idea for a mechanical note-writing machine designed to facilitate the reproduction of musical scores was never realized. Artist Claudia Märzendorfer’s ice-sculpture model of Schoenberg’s device is an homage that speaks to the technological limitations of that time, in that it has no functionality - other than to melt over the paper.
